Common auto electrical jobs in Chiltern

Chiltern is one of north-east Victoria's old gold towns, with a well-preserved historic streetscape that draws visitors. The Hume Freeway bypasses the town about a kilometre to the south, and the national park surrounds it with box-ironbark forest and bush tracks.

Caravans calling in off the Hume

Chiltern's heritage streets and bush camping draw caravanners off the Hume Freeway, and many locals tow vans too. Common faults are trailer lights that only half work, electric brakes that feel weak and van batteries that don't charge on the road. Check the plug pins for corrosion and the earth first. Our guide on 7-pin vs 12-pin trailer plugs explains the differences if your plugs don't match.

Freeway commuters to Wodonga

Plenty of Chiltern residents use the Hume Freeway to commute to Wodonga or Albury. Freeway driving is easy on the charging system, but a failing alternator or tired battery can still leave you on the shoulder. Watch for a flickering battery light, dimming headlights or a whining noise. Our guide on the battery warning light while driving explains what to do if it comes on.

4WDs for the national park

Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park has bush tracks that draw 4WD owners and campers. Light bars, UHF radios, compressors and fridges are the common add-ons. Compressors draw a lot of current and should run through an Anderson plug with heavy cable and a fuse or breaker at the battery. Make sure every accessory is fused and tidy, as dust and corrugations find any weak connection.

Rodents in heritage sheds

Older sheds, garages and farm buildings around Chiltern give mice and rats plenty of places to live, and cars parked in them are vulnerable. Chewed wiring can cause intermittent faults that come and go. Sealed, soldered repairs fix the damage, and cleaning out nesting material helps stop it happening again. Check the engine bay regularly through autumn, when mice move in from the paddocks.

Chiltern auto electrical questions

What does a 12-pin trailer plug do that a 7-pin doesn't?

A 12-pin plug has extra pins for things like a caravan battery charge wire, reversing lights and a separate earth for the charging circuit. A 7-pin plug covers the basics plus usually one auxiliary circuit. Many caravans use 12-pin plugs so the van battery charges while towing. Adaptors are available, but a matching plug is more reliable.

Can I run a compressor from my cigarette socket?

Only small ones. Larger 4WD compressors draw more current than a cigarette socket can safely supply. They should connect directly to the battery or through an Anderson plug with heavy cable and a fuse or circuit breaker near the battery. Running a big compressor from a socket can melt wiring or blow fuses.

Local tip for Chiltern

If you head into the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park, check your battery, lights and UHF before you leave town. Some tracks are a long way from help, and a flat battery at a campsite is a real problem. Carry a jump pack, spare fuses and a few cable ties, and tell someone where you're going.
