Common auto electrical jobs in Bonegilla

Bonegilla is best known for the former migrant reception centre, which ran from 1947 to 1971 and is remembered at heritage-listed Block 19. Today the area is home to the Army Logistic Training Centre at Latchford Barracks, rural properties and lake access, a short drive from Wodonga along the Murray Valley Highway.

Boat trailers on Lake Hume

With boat ramps and camping on the lake shore, boat trailers are a big part of life in Bonegilla. Submerging the back of a trailer every launch is hard on incandescent globes and open plugs, and the earth connection is usually the first thing to go. Sealed LED lamps and a trailer loom with a dedicated earth wire fix most recurring faults. See 7-pin vs 12-pin trailer plugs if you are upgrading the plug at the same time.

Camping power by the lake

Weekend campers around Lake Hume run fridges, lights and phone chargers from a second battery. A fridge can flatten an undersized battery overnight in summer, and thin cable from the front of the car to the back loses a lot of voltage. A DC-DC charger, correctly sized cable and a solar input for longer stays keep everything running. Our guide on choosing a DC-DC charger or isolator compares the options.

Personal 4WDs and utes

With Latchford Barracks close by, plenty of locals and personnel drive 4WDs that head to the high country on days off. Common add-ons include UHF radios, light bars, rear work lights and fridge outlets. Each needs a fused supply close to the battery and a tidy cable run that won't rub through on corrugations. Wiring that is done properly once doesn't need chasing every time something goes quiet on a trip.

Air conditioning for hot lake days

North-east Victorian summers get properly hot, and towing a boat up from the lake with the air conditioning struggling is miserable. Plenty of faults are electrical: a compressor clutch that won't engage, a condenser fan that has stopped, or a relay or pressure switch that has failed. Those can be tested without touching the gas. If the system needs a leak found or a regas, that work must be done by a licensed technician.

Bonegilla auto electrical questions

Should I disconnect my boat battery over winter?

If the boat won't be used for months, either keep the battery on a smart maintainer or fully charge it and disconnect it. A battery left connected to a bilge pump, radio memory or sounder slowly goes flat, and a flat battery left for weeks loses capacity for good. Check the charge every month or so, and charge it fully before the first trip of the season.

Why does my camping fridge stop overnight?

Usually the second battery isn't getting a full charge while driving, or the fridge's low-voltage cut-out is set too high. Thin cable between the car and the fridge can also drop enough voltage to trigger the cut-out even when the battery is fine. Measure the voltage at the fridge with it running. If it is much lower than at the battery, the cable needs upgrading.

Local tip for Bonegilla

After a day on Lake Hume, unplug the trailer and let the plug and lamps dry before you shut the shed. Then spray a little water-dispersant into the tow vehicle socket every few months. Trailer faults in Bonegilla almost always start with water sitting in a connection, and drying things out is free.
